How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Choose packaging by fragility and size: use heavy corrugated boxes for small cabinet or return-air grilles, and wood crates for long wall panels or decorative screens.
  2. Protect finished faces with foam wrap and corner guards, then add internal cross-bracing to stop slats from flexing; consider a poly moisture barrier for stained or sealed wood.
  3. Palletize each box or crate to a 4‑way skid, keep weight centered, and band or stretch-wrap firmly so forklift handling doesn’t rack delicate latticework.
  4. Mark cartons clearly: “Fragile – Grillwork” and orientation arrows. Put NMFC 37980, Class 100 on the BOL, plus piece count and exterior dimensions for smooth check-in.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing with fixed Class 100—no density math, fewer reclass surprises, and cleaner carrier audits.
  • Faster quotes and tendering since it’s non-hazardous and accepted in standard boxes or crates across LTL networks.
  • Lower claims risk when braced and crated properly, reducing costly replacements of high-finish architectural grilles.
  • Cross-carrier consistency under the Building Woodwork Group, improving inspector acceptance and shortening dock dwell times.
