How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Protect the finish: sleeve each rail in paper or poly, cap the ends, add corner protectors, then strap into tidy wrapped bundles to prevent scuffs on the primer.
- Plan for length: declare exact piece and bundle lengths; book carriers that accept long freight and expect overlength fees if rails exceed common LTL thresholds (e.g., 8–12 ft).
- Unitize smartly: place bundles on long runners or a custom skid so forklifts can lift from the sides without bowing or breaking delicate profiles.
- Document clearly: list “Staircase Handrails, Primed – Class 85” on the BOL, count bundles, and add “Do Not Stack” or top‑load instructions if profiles are easily crushed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: a fixed Class 85 rating removes density audits and helps lock in accurate LTL quotes.
- Lower claims risk: wrapped straight lengths and corner protection safeguard the primed surface, cutting rework and replacements.
- Faster dock handling: consolidated wrapped bundles reduce touches and speed cross‑dock transfers for better on‑time performance.
- Broader carrier options: non‑hazardous woodwork moves on standard networks, improving coverage and transit flexibility.
