How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize 25 kg/50 lb bags on 48x40 GMA pallets, interlock-stack, and keep bags flush with the deck to prevent punctures and sifting.
- Use poly-lined or sift-proof bags, add corner boards and top sheets, then stretch-wrap tightly; mark pallets “Food Ingredient – Keep Dry.”
- Print the NMFC description on the BOL: “Cake, cocoa press, ≤15% butter fat, in bags, NMFC 39550” and confirm the applicable class (50 or 65) before tender.
- Book food-grade dry vans when possible and avoid co-loading with odor-heavy chemicals; control humidity to prevent caking and flavor absorption.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable commodity classing (50–65) simplifies quoting and can outperform density-based pricing for recurring lanes.
- Bagged, pallet-friendly units improve cube efficiency and reduce handling, lowering OS&D risk and claim costs.
- Non-hazardous product expands carrier options and accelerates tender acceptance across LTL networks.
- Clear labeling and standardized unitization support food safety audits and streamline dock turns for faster throughput.
