Notes

Note 40101: NOTE-Also applies on candy, chocolate, confections or chewing gum contained in, attached to or packaged with toys or novelties, including baskets with candy, chocolate, confections or chewing gum, with or without toys or novelties, or candy, chocolate or confections in the form of toys or novelties.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density before quoting: weigh each box and divide by cubic feet. Expect fluffy items like marshmallows to rate closer to Class 150, while dense chewing gum trends toward Class 77.5.
  2. Pack in sturdy corrugated boxes with food-safe liners and dividers. Eliminate voids to boost density and prevent scuffs on chocolate bars, truffles, or coated nuts.
  3. Control temperature by lane and season. Use insulated liners or cold packs in hot months and mark cartons “Do Not Freeze” for chocolate or glazes that crystallize.
  4. Document precisely on the BOL: “NMFC 40100,” packaging as boxes/packages, piece count, actual weight, and calculated density. Separate odor-sensitive candy from chemicals in the same shipment.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Right-size packaging to raise density and capture lower classes within 77.5–150, cutting LTL spend without changing carriers.
  • Accurate NMFC 40100 labeling reduces inspections, reclass bills, and claim disputes—clean invoices and faster cash cycles.
  • Enhanced protection for melt-prone items reduces OS&D, returns, and seasonal spoilage, preserving margin and customer satisfaction.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds quoting, enabling competitive rates and quicker tender-to-pickup timelines.
