How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density before booking: weigh the boxed shipment and divide by cubic feet (e.g., 28 lb ÷ 2.8 cu ft = 10 pcf), then select the class within 50–400.
  2. Use rigid corrugated boxes with end protection; pad handles and caps, and sleeve ferrules or tips to prevent punctures through the carton.
  3. Palletize long cartons to avoid overhang; run cartons lengthwise, add corner boards, then stretch-wrap and strap for stability during LTL handling.
  4. List “NMFC 40150 – Canes (Walking Sticks) in boxes” and your measured density on the BOL, and follow Item 170 packaging and documentation rules.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate density entries reduce reclasses and unexpected rate adjustments tied to the 50–400 schedule.
  • Boxed, well-protected canes lower damage risk to handles and tips, cutting OS&D claims and replacements.
  • Consistent carton sizes cube efficiently on pallets, improving trailer utilization and lowering cost per unit.
  • Clear NMFC mapping and Item 170 compliance speeds quoting, automates TMS rating, and strengthens claims defense.
