How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm it’s boxed: this listing applies only to caps, covers, lids, rings, tops, and similar closures shipped in boxes; other packaging can trigger a reclass.
- Calculate density for Item 170: measure each carton or the full pallet (L×W×H in inches ÷ 1728), then divide total weight by cubic feet to pick the correct class.
- Tight-pack small parts: use polybags or inner cartons to prevent nesting voids, fill empty space, and protect thin edges on metal or plastic closures.
- Note material and review exceptions: describe as “closures, NOI, boxed” and check Note, item 40226 for any material-specific exclusions before tendering.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimized pack-out raises PCF, unlocking lower freight classes and reducing LTL rates on high-volume closure shipments.
- Boxed packaging aligns with the NMFC listing, minimizing inspection delays, reclass fees, and OS&D claims for delicate edges and threads.
- Simple density rule under Item 170 speeds quoting and enables predictable landed-cost planning for beverage, cosmetics, and pharma cap programs.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and allows consolidation with other finished packaging components for faster turns.
