How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 40420, Class 85 on the BOL and describe as “Caps, Christmas tree ornament, steel, in boxes” to prevent reclass or inspection delays.
- Bag loose caps and any hooks/hangers in sealed polybags, then place in chipboard partitions inside a sturdy corrugated box (32 ECT or stronger) to avoid loss and metal-on-metal scuffing.
- Palletize cartons tight with no overhang on a 48x40 pallet; add corner boards, stretch wrap, and two straps to keep small-part boxes from shifting during LTL handling.
- Keep commodities pure per carton; do not mix with other holiday items. Example: 2 inner cartons x 2,500 caps each per master carton, labeled with piece count and weight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: a fixed Class 85 rating eliminates density disputes and helps lock in accurate LTL quotes.
- Fewer restrictions: non-hazardous steel parts expand carrier options and avoid hazmat surcharges.
- Damage and loss control: box-only packaging standard reduces claims for tiny metal components and speeds claims resolution if needed.
- Season-ready throughput: clear, simple classification streamlines peak holiday replenishment and consolidations.
