How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack metal hub (wheel bearing) grease caps in sturdy corrugated boxes with dividers or partitioned trays to prevent lip deformation and surface scratching.
- Bag parts in bulk with VCI liners or poly bags to limit moisture and grit transfer, then cushion voids with kraft or foam so small caps don’t rattle and dent.
- When shipping multiple SKUs (sizes or finishes), separate and label inner packs with counts; note “NMFC 40470, Class 85” on the BOL for clean rating.
- For high-volume replenishment, place sealed boxes on pallets; if using drums for bulk metal caps, secure lids, line interiors, and band drums to pallets.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass disputes for small metal parts programs.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and streamlines paperwork across multi-stop LTL routes.
- Boxed, stackable packs improve cube utilization and lower damage rates versus loose metal in bins.
- Consistent packaging and clear labeling accelerate cross-dock handling for automotive aftermarket and OEM replenishment.
