Note 40571: NOTE-Also applies on broken, burnt out, worn out or scrap articles of carbon which have value only for reconversion into carbon.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density for Item 170: weigh the shipment and compute cubic feet (L×W×H in inches ÷ 1728). Example: 40×48×36 in = 40 cu ft; 1,200 lb ÷ 40 = 30 PCF.
- Match packaging to the carbon form: brushes in Package 1273 or sturdy boxes; furnace/electrolytic electrodes crated with end caps; petroleum coke in lined bags or drums to contain dust.
- Protect product integrity: keep dry battery electrodes clean and dry, use liners for fines, and block/bracer pallets so heavy plates or tubes don’t shift in transit.
- Bill of Lading tips: describe as Carbon, NOI, density-based with packaging type, piece count, weight, and PCF. Do not include scrap here—use Note item 40571 for scrap.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct density-based rating prevents reclasses and surprise carrier charges, stabilizing landed cost.
- Optimized packing raises PCF (fewer voids, tighter cartons), often achieving a lower freight class and better LTL rates.
- Non-hazardous status cuts compliance overhead—no hazmat surcharges or special paperwork for these carbon items.
- Single NMFC for varied carbon goods (brushes, electrodes, coke, plates) streamlines quoting and BOL prep, saving ops time.
