How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book at Class 50 as “Carbon Mixture, unbaked” under NMFC 40590, and select boxed packaging in your TMS to match the carrier’s stowability expectations.
- Use heavy double‑wall corrugated boxes lined with poly to contain pitch/tar fines; seal all seams and palletize tightly with stretch wrap to prevent sifting.
- Label pallets “Keep Dry” and “Protect From Heat”; avoid staging near heaters where pitch or tar can soften and seep, especially during winter terminal transfers.
- State contents clearly on the BOL (e.g., ground coke + pitch, no furnace lining materials), note non‑hazardous status, and include carton count and pallet quantity.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 rating can produce lower LTL rates versus density-based items, improving landed cost on bulk mineral inputs.
- Non‑hazardous designation avoids hazmat fees and carrier restrictions, streamlining carrier selection and accelerating transit options.
- Cubic, boxed freight improves stowability and reduces reclass risk, limiting unexpected accessorials from reweighs or inspections.
- Clean, lined packaging minimizes residue and leak claims, cutting dock handling time and protecting vendor performance metrics.
