How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack carbon rods in sturdy corrugated boxes with dividers or foam channels to prevent contact; add a liner to contain fine carbon dust.
- Palletize cartons square to the deck, then strap and stretch-wrap; limit top-stacking to avoid vertical crush on brittle electrodes.
- Print NMFC item 40600 and Class 85 on the BOL and labels; select non-hazardous service to prevent accidental hazmat fees.
- Provide carton count and exterior dimensions for quoting and capacity planning, even though the class is fixed and not density-based.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85 rating stabilizes LTL rates and prevents costly reclass charges common with density-based items.
- Non-hazardous designation eliminates hazmat surcharges and shortens tender time, improving dock-to-dock velocity.
- Boxed packaging reduces breakage and OS&D claims on fragile carbon electrodes, lowering replacement and admin costs.
- Clear NMFC mapping (40600) speeds carrier acceptance and claims resolution, streamlining operations for recurring shipments.
