How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Book at Class 50 as “Carbon Mixture, unbaked” under NMFC 40590, and select boxed packaging in your TMS to match the carrier’s stowability expectations.
  2. Use heavy double‑wall corrugated boxes lined with poly to contain pitch/tar fines; seal all seams and palletize tightly with stretch wrap to prevent sifting.
  3. Label pallets “Keep Dry” and “Protect From Heat”; avoid staging near heaters where pitch or tar can soften and seep, especially during winter terminal transfers.
  4. State contents clearly on the BOL (e.g., ground coke + pitch, no furnace lining materials), note non‑hazardous status, and include carton count and pallet quantity.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 50 rating can produce lower LTL rates versus density-based items, improving landed cost on bulk mineral inputs.
  • Non‑hazardous designation avoids hazmat fees and carrier restrictions, streamlining carrier selection and accelerating transit options.
  • Cubic, boxed freight improves stowability and reduces reclass risk, limiting unexpected accessorials from reweighs or inspections.
  • Clean, lined packaging minimizes residue and leak claims, cutting dock handling time and protecting vendor performance metrics.
