How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State the commodity on the BOL: “Flour, ground petroleum coke, NMFC 40650, Class 50, non-hazardous.” No density needed for rating.
- Use sift‑proof, double‑wall corrugated boxes with a sealed 2–4 mil poly liner. Example: a 40 lb fill in 275# test with H‑taping to stop fines leakage.
- Palletize tight: stretch‑wrap 3–5 turns, add corner boards, use a top sheet, and keep seams upright. Cap pallets and avoid over‑stacking to limit dust escape.
- Protect from moisture and static. Keep boxes dry, consider antistatic liners for ultrafine material, and time pickups to avoid rain exposure.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
