How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Note NMFC 40730 and Class 70 on the BOL, and specify the package type—boxed insulated shipper or insulated blanket skid. Include gross weight; density isn’t required.
- Pack with vented, double‑wall cartons and foam/EPS liners; never seal airtight. For blanket skids, use breathable insulated blankets, cornerboards, and two-way strapping with slight airflow gaps.
- Plan short transits to offset sublimation. Choose guaranteed or expedited LTL and avoid weekend layovers; add Do Not Stack on tall insulated shippers as needed.
- Label “Dry Ice (Solid CO2)” and apply orientation/venting notices. Keep away from live animals and enclosed cabs; request storage in ventilated terminal areas.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 means no density math, reducing reclass risk and invoice disputes.
- Non-hazardous under this NMFC item eliminates hazmat fees and paperwork, lowering total shipping cost.
- Flexible packaging—boxes or insulated blanket skids—supports food, pharma, and lab cold‑chain moves with fewer temperature excursions.
- Predictable rating streamlines quoting and TMS automation, speeding tenders and improving lane planning.
