How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Pack cards or tickets flat in rigid corrugated boxes (200# test or better) with chipboard dividers and fill voids to prevent edge curl or stripe scuffing.
  2. Keep product away from magnets and strong speakers during storage and transit; use “Do Not Bend” and “Keep From Magnets” callouts on carton faces.
  3. For pallets, column-stack cartons, add corner boards and a top cap, then stretch-wrap to 50% overlap; avoid crushing by limiting stack height to the carton ECT rating.
  4. On the BOL, describe precisely: “Cards or Tickets, paper or plastic, with magnetic stripes, NMFC 40750, boxed, non-haz.” and verify Note 40751 applicability before tender.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Lower, predictable LTL costs with a fixed class range (55–65) that doesn’t require density calculations.
  • Non-hazardous status reduces compliance steps and speeds up carrier acceptance and terminal handling.
  • Clear commodity description minimizes reclass/rebill risk and keeps invoice audits clean.
  • Damage control on magnetic stripes (through proper boxing and palletizing) prevents returns and costly reprints.
