How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack iron caster bolts, shanks, forks, and sockets in sturdy corrugated boxes; bag small parts by size, cap or sleeve threaded ends, and add dividers to prevent metal-on-metal abrasion.
- Balance weight across the carton and reinforce seams with filament tape; mark HEAVY when over 50 lb to cue safer handling and reduce drop risk.
- Add corrosion control for iron parts—use VCI paper or a light oil wrap, then poly-bag to contain residue and protect the carton from staining.
- On the BOL, list NMFC 41690, Class 65, and a detailed count by SKU; keep caster hardware in a dedicated carton line item if shipping with wheels or plates.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 (not density-based) delivers predictable LTL pricing and lowers the chance of reclass and billing disputes.
- Box-friendly packaging reduces handling time and damage claims for dense iron hardware with sharp edges or exposed threads.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat surcharges, documentation, and accessorial delays.
- Clear NMFC mapping speeds quoting and improves landed-cost accuracy for MRO replenishment and OEM production runs.
