How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List NMFC 41795 and Class 250 on the BOL, and confirm the item is shipped in boxes to match the rule set (see Note, item 41796).
  2. Use rigid double‑wall cartons with corner and face protection to shield fins or delicate cores; fill voids with foam or honeycomb pads and mark Fragile/This Side Up.
  3. Palletize boxed units to prevent edge crush: no overhang, strap and stretch‑wrap, and apply Do Not Stack if fin density or frame design won’t tolerate top load.
  4. Provide true weights and outside carton dimensions for rating and capacity planning, and choose LTL carriers experienced with HVAC coils and cooling media.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing: a fixed Class 250 eliminates density disputes and speeds instant quoting in TMS platforms.
  • Compliance saves money: shipping specifically “in boxes” reduces reclassification risk, inspections, and associated fee add‑ons.
  • Lower damage exposure: reinforced cartons and proper palletization protect fragile fin surfaces, cutting claims and replacement cycles.
  • Faster dock flow: clear labeling and standard boxing simplify cross‑dock handling, improving on‑time performance to job sites and OEM lines.
