How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare the item as hazardous and include current SDS details on the BOL; confirm NMFC 41950 with a fixed Class 55 for box or crate shipments.
- Package in heavy-duty boxes or wood crates lined with poly to contain dust; tape seams and add absorbent pads at corners to prevent leakage.
- Palletize tight: no overhang, use slip sheets, and band or strap the crate. Mark orientation and keep weight evenly distributed across the pallet.
- Separate from heat sources and incompatible loads (oxidizers, food). Book with hazmat-certified LTL carriers and provide a 24/7 emergency contact.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: Class 55 removes density disputes, speeding quotes and reducing reclass fees.
- Hazmat-ready packaging in boxes or crates improves carrier acceptance and minimizes delays at pickup.
- Lower damage risk through lined crates/boxes cuts spill cleanups and claim exposure.
- Clear classification for sulfur-mix cement supports accurate rate shopping and more competitive LTL pricing.
