How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density before booking: total weight ÷ cubic feet. Example: 50 bags × 56 lb on a 48×40×30 in pallet ≈ 2,800 lb / 33.3 ft³ = ~84 lb/ft³, then select the class bracket under Item 170.
  2. Protect from moisture and sifting. Use poly-lined bags or inner liners for lime or flue dust, add a pallet cap and stretch wrap, and mark BOL and labels “Keep Dry.”
  3. Stabilize packaging: interlock-stack bags, add corner boards, and use slip sheets. For pails/drums of acid-proof cement, secure lids with bands or ring clamps and keep upright arrows visible.
  4. Document precisely on the BOL: “Cement, hydraulic, in bags” or “Plaster NOI, dry, in drums,” include total weight, pallet count, and calculated density. If shipping a compound, review Note, item 42111.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Right-sized class from accurate density often lowers LTL rates for dense Portland cement while preventing reclass fees on lighter materials like flue dust.
  • Moisture control and reinforced unitization reduce hardening, bag ruptures, and spill clean-up charges, cutting claims and dock delays.
  • Consistent pallet heights and tight wraps speed cross-dock handling, improving on-time performance and limiting accessorials such as rework or non-stackable fees.
  • Clear NMFC description (42110 vs. compound under item 42111) minimizes billing disputes, accelerates audits, and helps carriers rate correctly the first time.
