Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
42440.00 Chambers, Cylinders, Towers or Vessels, ammonia, gas, petroleum or coal tar oil cracking, distilling, refining or separating; metal, with walls not less than 1/2 inch in thickness 85

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Document the item as a metal refining vessel with walls 1/2 inch or thicker and reference NMFC 42440, Class 85 on the BOL.
  2. Use steel skids or a welded cradle and bolt the vessel at the saddles. Block, brace, and strap to prevent roll or shift; shrink wrap alone isn’t sufficient.
  3. Cap and protect all nozzles, flanges, and manways with bolted covers. Include a gas-free or cleaning certificate if previously used with ammonia, gas, or petroleum.
  4. Plan equipment at pickup and delivery. Most units need a crane or high-capacity forklift, wide-door access, and advance notice for oversize heights.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, reducing reclass and surprise charges.
  • Clear NMFC alignment speeds procurement and project logistics for refineries, chem plants, and fabricators.
  • Thick-wall construction lowers damage risk when properly cribbed, potentially lowering insurance premiums.
  • Accurate item naming and packaging cuts accessorials for lift, rehandling, and detention by improving handling efficiency.
