Notes
Note 42456: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify product as non-activated charcoal and note it on the BOL. This avoids confusion with activated carbon and confirms no DOT labels or placards are required.
- Determine density (PCF) from the handling unit’s weight and cube. Use your pallet footprint and stacked height to place the shipment in the correct 50–400 class under Item 170.
- Prefer sturdy boxes or gaylords with plastic liners to contain fines. If shipping bags, palletize tightly, add corner boards, and stretch-wrap to prevent leaks and overhang.
- Keep units dry and clean to prevent weight creep and mess. Document your density calculation on the paperwork to reduce reclass risks and speed up carrier inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous status streamlines booking and avoids hazmat fees, cutting accessorial costs and reducing carrier handling time.
- Density-based classes reward efficient packing; tighter cubes and right-size boxes can shift you into lower classes and lower LTL rates.
- Clean, well-lined boxes minimize dust claims and OS&D issues, improving damage ratios and protecting your carrier pricing.
- Accurate NMFC 42455 use (see Note item 42456) curbs disputes, shortens audits, and stabilizes freight invoices across seasonal charcoal demand.
