How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the exact product and form, then confirm via the SDS that it is not DOT-regulated; e.g., water-based cleaner in 55-gallon plastic drums or dry absorbent in kraft bags.
- Match packaging to NMFC language: plastic or fiber drums, steel pails, poly bags, or IBC totes. Use leakproof closures, liners, and secure palletization with banding and stretch wrap.
- Capture key specs for quoting: density or specific gravity, net weight per package, and unit count. Many chemical listings rate by density, so include this data upfront.
- On the BOL, do not write “Chemicals Group.” Use the precise NMFC item tied to your product name and packaging, and attach the SDS or tech sheet for fast carrier approval.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduce reclass and inspection fees by mapping the group entry to the correct NMFC item before tendering freight.
- Leverage the non-hazardous status to expand carrier options and avoid hazmat surcharges, cutting total landed cost.
- Stronger packaging and unitization lower claim risk, minimize spill clean-up charges, and keep on-time performance high.
- Complete specs (product form, packaging, density) yield tighter, lower LTL quotes and support better FAK negotiations.
