NMFC Description Class
44155.00 Corrosive Materials, NOI, see Note, item 44156, in U.S. DOT-authorized packaging:

Notes

Note 44156: NOTE-Applies on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Hazard Class 8, Corrosive Material, as defined in 49 CFR 173.136 and required to bear a notice to that effect on bills of lading and packaging.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Select NMFC 44155 for corrosive chemicals not otherwise indexed, packaged in U.S. DOT-authorized UN-rated drums, jerricans, or IBCs (e.g., acid cleaners or etchants).
  2. Review Note, Item 44156 to confirm naming and packing group; match the proper UN ID (e.g., UN1760 when applicable) and align 49 CFR shipping papers, labels, and marks.
  3. Palletize upright with absorbent trays and secure containment; add orientation arrows, keep-dry notices, and segregate from oxidizers, cyanides, or flammables per carrier rules.
  4. Verify your carrier’s HazMat acceptance, attach 24-hour emergency contact and ERG info, and plan for HazMat surcharges or limited quantity options when eligible.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Faster tenders when a product-specific NMFC isn’t available, using the NOI catch‑all to speed quoting and scheduling.
  • Reduced reclass and exception costs by pairing the correct NMFC with DOT-authorized packaging and compliant paperwork.
  • Higher carrier acceptance and fewer terminal delays thanks to UN-spec packs and proper hazard communication.
  • Clear cost planning: anticipate HazMat fees and optimize packaging choices to balance safety, compliance, and LTL spend.
