How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm you’re shipping bagged blends of clay with ground coal, wood flour, or binder/treating compounds. If the product isn’t in bags, use a different NMFC item.
- Keep moisture out: use plastic-lined or sealed sacks, stretch-wrap the pallet, add a top sheet, and avoid floor-loading. Wet bags can tear and change product performance.
- Document exact weights. This item rates by weight, so scale tickets prevent reclass: e.g., 40 bags × 50 lb + 45 lb pallet = 2,045 lb gross.
- Palletize tightly with corner boards and 3–4 stretch-wrap passes. Mark “Foundry Sand Additives—Bagged, NMFC 4587, Class 50” to speed carrier inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 delivers favorable LTL pricing for dense, bagged mineral mixes—ideal for routine replenishment to foundries and mold shops.
- Weight-based rating eliminates density calculations, cutting quote time and reducing reclass disputes or inspection delays.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat surcharges and special paperwork, widening carrier options and simplifying scheduling.
- Uniform bag packaging improves stackability and handling, lowering damage risk and OS&D costs across multi-stop casting supply routes.
