How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the exact NMFC item within the China Group (e.g., porcelain dinnerware, earthenware flowerpots, decorative pottery) and print it on the BOL.
- Cushion-to-carton: wrap each piece, use cell dividers or molded pulp, then double-box. Palletize tight cartons with corner boards and zero pallet overhang.
- Label cartons Fragile and Keep Dry; cap pallet height to limit crush risk. If not stackable, add cones/top-load protectors and note it on the BOL.
- For high-value sets or bulk restaurant ware, consider plywood crating or custom foam-in-place. Request limited handling or delivery appointments when needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Avoid reclass fees by tying shipments to the precise NMFC item under the China Group rather than using a generic class.
- Lower damage ratios via ceramic-focused packaging—partitions, double-boxing, and stabilized pallets reduce claim exposure.
- Accelerate quoting and routing with a clear material description (china, earthenware or pottery) and confirmed non-hazardous status.
- Improve rate outcomes by documenting stackability, carton strength specs, and accurate piece counts for carrier review.
