Notes
Note 47651: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare the product precisely: “Chlorinated Phenol Petroleum Solution, ≤5%,” and note it is a liquid wood preservative not requiring DOT hazard labels to prevent hazmat holds.
- Use leakproof inner containers (e.g., sealed cans or HDPE bottles) placed upright in sturdy boxes with absorbent cushioning and lined poly bags to contain any trace seepage.
- Weigh each box ready to ship, including all inners and packing, since this item uses a weight-based NMFC class with two class options in the 50–65 range.
- Palletize boxes tightly with stretch wrap and a top sheet; mark orientation (This Side Up) and include the SDS in documentation for carrier awareness even though it’s non-regulated.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier availability, lowering LTL costs and speeding tender acceptance.
- Weight-based classing (two tiers within 50–65) lets you plan carton counts and pallet weights to land on the most favorable rating for your lanes.
- Standard box packaging streamlines fulfillment and reduces OS&D risk compared to drums, cutting claims exposure and improving delivery reliability.
- Clear product naming and SDS sharing minimize compliance questions at terminals, reducing inspection delays and avoiding reclass or accessorial fees.
