How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the shipment is prepaid and consists of paper catalogs or catalog sections packed in cartons; non-prepaid moves may fall under different items noted in the NMFC.
  2. Use rigid, double-wall boxes for heavy stacks; band internal bundles, add corner protectors, and line cartons with a moisture barrier to protect inked pages.
  3. Mark each package with piece count and “Catalogs – Prepaid – NMFC 4850 – Class 60” to reduce inspection delays and reclass risk.
  4. Master-pack small cartons on a pallet with stretch wrap, but keep the primary unit as packaged cartons to align with the ‘in packages’ requirement.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 60 rating helps quote LTL costs accurately and avoid density disputes.
  • Prepaid status and packaged presentation reduce billing issues and minimize reclassification fees.
  • Durable cartonization lowers damage risk on heavy paper loads, helping curb claims and reshipments.
  • Clear labeling and standardized packs speed carrier handling and consignee receiving, improving transit efficiency.
