How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack retail or bulk pipe cleaners in rigid cartons; bag bundles to contain fibers and use dividers so the wire cores don’t deform under stack pressure.
- Palletize cartons with no overhang on a 48x40; add corner boards and tight stretch-wrap, and use a top sheet to keep lightweight boxes clean and dry.
- Print the BOL as “Pipe Cleaners, boxed – NMFC 48560, Class 77.5”; mark non-hazardous and include accurate carton count for quick check-in.
- Consolidate small retail boxes into master cartons to reduce piece handling; keep cartons under 50 lb to speed cross-dock moves.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass fees and post-audit disputes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges or paperwork delays.
- Boxed packaging minimizes crush and bend damage, cutting claim rates and keeping retail packs shelf-ready.
- Carton and pallet consolidation improves cost per unit on lightweight, high-cube shipments and stabilizes freight quotes.
