Notes

Note 4862: NOTE-Applies only when newsprint paper has a fiber content consisting of not less than 60 percent of ground wood and certification is made on bills of lading and shipping orders by shippers at time of shipment as follows: "The printed matter herein described is printed on newsprint paper consisting of not less than 60 percent ground wood."

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Mark the BOL and cartons as “Prepaid Advertising Matter — NMFC 4860” and confirm any note references (see NMFC items 4742 and 4864) apply to your shipment.
  2. Bundle stacks of brochures or leaflets with shrink-wrap, add chipboard top/bottom pads, and pack in rigid corrugated cartons with edge protection to prevent corner crush.
  3. Keep cartons manageable (target under 40 lb each) and palletize with slip sheets; orient cartons label-out and use stretch wrap with top sheets to keep moisture off printed paper.
  4. Document title/edition counts on the BOL (e.g., 2,000 tri-fold brochures, 500 booklets) and avoid mixing heavy non-paper items in the same carton to reduce damage risk.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable quoting for printed advertising materials—no density-based reclass surprises when shipped prepaid in packages.
  • Lower claims and reprints by using industry-appropriate packaging (ECT-rated cartons, edge guards, clean pallets) for fragile paper edges and spines.
  • Faster distribution to mail houses, retail locations, or events with clear prepaid notation and straightforward NMFC alignment.
  • Optimized spend: consolidate bulk brochures and price lists via LTL instead of parcel, reducing per-piece shipping costs.
