How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pre-stage by size and finish: bag or wrap coils in VCI poly or paper to prevent tangling and rust, then nest them in small inner cartons with partitions.
- Select sturdy cartons: use 200# or 32 ECT boxes, add kraft or foam dunnage to remove voids, and tape in an H-pattern to keep coils from compressing each other.
- Palletize many small cartons: interlock rows on a 40x48 pallet, add corner boards, and apply 70-gauge stretch wrap; label two sides with SKU and piece counts.
- Document clearly: note “NMFC 48670, Class 100 – clock springs, boxed” on the BOL, mark non-hazardous, and include total carton and pallet quantities.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with a fixed Class 100 rating reduce reclass fees and surprise adjustments.
- Non-density classification accelerates quoting and auditing, saving administrative time for LTL shipments.
- Standard boxed packaging minimizes damage to small metal parts, cutting claim rates and replacement spend.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving routing flexibility.
