How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Build a floating pack: hang the clock from rigid inserts so the neon tube clears all walls; align with Package 558 when using standard cartons.
- Isolate components: wrap the transformer and clock motor separately, immobilize cords, and bag loose hardware to prevent contact with the glass ring.
- Add corner blocks and a top crossbar to stop movement, then shake-test; if you hear rattle, re-block until the unit sits silent.
- Label clearly: Fragile/This Side Up and Top Load Only, and choose LTL services with minimal handling to protect delicate neon assemblies.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct Class 400 assignment reduces reclass fees and billing disputes.
- Suspension packaging dramatically cuts glass breakage, leading to fewer claims and less downtime for retail or restaurant installs.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges.
- Clear NMFC mapping streamlines TMS rating and supports predictable budgeting for promotions and rollouts.
