How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Determine density before booking: measure outer L x W x H (inches) of the boxed, crated, or bale-wrapped shipment, divide by 1,728 for cubic feet, then weight ÷ cubic feet for lb/ft³.
  2. Match the NMFC packaging cues: nonwoven disposable wipes impregnated with cleansers should ship per Package 2341 with sealed inner liners; mattress/box spring coverings follow Package 2024; holders/rolls use Package 2213.
  3. Bundle by like materials to avoid reclass: keep blankets, bedspreads, towels, and webbing in clearly labeled boxes or wrapped rolls, add edge guards on rolls, and note “NMFC 49260” on the BOL for each line.
  4. Protect from moisture and abrasion: poly-bag inner packs, use desiccants for cotton items, avoid over-compressing bales which can change measured density, and palletize with no overhang for safe handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Optimize LTL cost with honest density: dense sample books or rolls often rate more favorably, reducing freight spend without sacrificing protection.
  • One umbrella item for many textiles: consolidating blankets, ribbons, wipes, and webbing under NMFC 49260 cuts paperwork and lowers reclass/inspection risk.
  • Packaging clarity reduces claims: boxes, crates, or wrapped bales/rolls aligned to NMFC packages improve damage prevention and accelerate payouts if claims occur.
  • Faster billing and fewer disputes: calling out specific sub-items and applicable package notes (e.g., 2341, 2024) speeds audits and avoids carrier corrections.
