Note 49831: NOTE-Shipper must certify on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment the actual value per pound of the property or the value group embracing the actual value per pound of the property. If the shipper fails to so certify the actual value, shipment will not be accepted, but if the shipment is inadvertently accepted, charges will initially be assessed on the basis of the class for the highest valuation provided. Upon proof of lower actual value, freight charges will be adjusted accordingly.

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

1. Use rigid boxes or locked salesmen’s trunks; record each trunk’s metal seal number on the BOL to support chain-of-custody and deter tampering.
2. Wrap garments in breathable garment bags or acid-free tissue to protect fur and hides from moisture; avoid tight plastic that traps humidity.
3. Pad voids with soft, non-abrasive dunnage so collars, pelts, and trims don’t mat or crease; keep hangers stabilized to prevent movement.
4. Provide exact piece count and exterior dimensions for each box or trunk for quoting and handling notes; flag any high-value pieces for added coverage.
