How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use corrugated boxes or NMFC Packages 1401/2265; remove hangers and add dividers for belts so buckles don’t puncture cartons.
- Capture scale weight and exterior dimensions per carton or pallet, calculate PCF, and note the density class math on the BOL.
- Fold garments and polybag to limit abrasion; for waders or outerwear with integrated boots, choose double‑wall cartons and cap pallets for stack strength.
- Separate unlike items—e.g., rigid costume pieces away from hosiery—and stack heavy coats low; label as non-hazardous apparel.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- One NMFC item covers belts, coats, costumes, gloves, hosiery, and waders, simplifying paperwork and reducing reclass exposure on mixed shipments.
- Right-sized packing increases PCF, often lowering the density class and cutting LTL rates while staying compliant with boxes/Packages 1401 or 2265.
- Better cube control improves trailer utilization and helps avoid oversize fees, enabling sharper pricing during seasonal apparel surges.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and streamlines routing, reducing transit times and eliminating hazmat surcharges.
