How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Rate and book at Class 70 under NMFC 49981; no density needed. Clearly list “fruit/vegetable wax coatings, boxed” on the BOL.
- Use leak-resistant inner containers and place them in sturdy double‑wall cartons with liners or poly bags. Example: four 1‑gal HDPE jugs, bagged and boxed.
- Palletize cartons on a solid deck, no overhang. Add corner boards, stretch-wrap tightly, and mark “This Side Up” to prevent seepage and crushing.
- Request Protect From Freezing in winter and avoid excessive heat. Wax emulsions can separate if frozen or overheated; note temperature guidance on paperwork.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 70 rating speeds quoting and reduces reclass disputes.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and extra paperwork.
- Boxed packaging lowers leak and damage claims, improving OS&D performance.
- Accurate NMFC 49981 use helps prevent reweigh/reclass fees during peak produce seasons.
