How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm density before quoting: weigh the boxed shipment and divide by its cubic feet to get PCF, then apply Item 170 density breaks.
- Coil leashes and straps, bag them to prevent tangles, and use dividers or pads around buckles and clips to avoid abrasion.
- Cap prongs and D-rings, wrap metal hardware, and use strong corrugated boxes with H-taping to stop punctures or carton burst.
- List materials on the BOL (nylon, leather, webbing) and note “in boxes” to align with the NMFC packaging requirement.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower freight spend by optimizing carton size and compression to raise PCF and achieve a more favorable density class.
- Reduce reclass and inspection fees by packing strictly in boxes and documenting density per Item 170.
- No hazmat handling needed, enabling broader carrier options and faster tender acceptance.
- Predictable rating for pet and child-safety gear programs, supporting accurate bids and consistent LTL cost modeling.
