How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure the longest piece end-to-end, including couplers or caps, and record exact bundle dimensions to avoid oversize charges on 10–20 ft aluminum tubes.
- Bundle straight pipe with wood dunnage and banding plus edge protectors; cap both ends to prevent ovaling and label bundles “Do Not Fork Between Bands.”
- Pack elbows, tees, and reducers in double-wall cartons with dividers or foam; then secure cartons to a pallet so fittings don’t migrate inside bundles.
- On the BOL, spell out “Aluminum blow pipe/fittings—non-hazardous,” list piece counts and packaging (e.g., 2 bundles, 5 cartons), and select carriers that handle long freight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Damage control: capped ends and tight bundles keep roundness, cutting claims and rework on precision-fit ducting and pneumatic lines.
- Cleaner billing: explicit description and packaging details reduce reclass/reweigh disputes when class is N/A and rating depends on carrier rules.
- Handling efficiency: consolidating small fittings on one pallet speeds cross-docking and lowers touch points compared to loose parts in mixed freight.
- Broader carrier options: non-hazardous aluminum components typically qualify for standard LTL networks, helping secure better rates and transit times.
