How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as “Colloid, protein” on the BOL and rate at Class 60; density entry isn’t needed because this item is not density-based.
- Match packaging to state: use moisture-barrier lined bags for dry powders; choose tight-head poly or steel drums with tamper seals for liquids to prevent leaks.
- Palletize carefully: brick-stack bagged product with slip sheets and full stretch wrap; secure drums with ring clamps and use absorbent mats or spill pallets for LTL.
- Confirm it’s not gelatin (see Note, item 50012). Include the SDS and any temperature guidance if the protein is heat sensitive, even though it’s non-hazmat.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 60 eliminates density reclasses and rating disputes.
- No hazmat fees: non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and reduces surcharges.
- Fewer claims: drums or lined bags limit moisture ingress and contamination, lowering damage costs.
- Faster operations: a single NMFC and clear packaging specs speed quotes and tendering.
