Notes
Note 50087: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the description exactly as: “Compounds, bleach assistant, NOI” with NMFC 50086 and reference Note item 50087 on the BOL to avoid reclass.
- Use approved packaging types: lined multiwall bags, tight-head drums, or IBCs. Keep IBC valves capped and band drums or unitize bags on pallets.
- Weigh the shipment accurately and include pallet weight. Class 55 is weight-based for this item, so no density or dimensional rating is needed.
- Segregate from strong oxidizers and moisture sources during transit. Provide an SDS for receivers even though the item is non-DOT hazardous.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 55 independent of density streamlines quoting and prevents surprise class adjustments.
- Lower accessorial risk: non-hazardous status widens carrier options and removes hazmat fees and paperwork burdens.
- Packaging flexibility: bags, drums, or IBCs let shippers optimize for handling, damage prevention, and per-pound freight costs.
- Fewer delays: clear NMFC 50086 labeling with Note item 50087 reduces inspections, reclass fees, and claim exposure.
