How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select the correct weight-based class: heavier combined shipments of these compounds may qualify for the lower class within the 55–65 range, so quote by total weight, not dimensions.
- Package powders or granules in sealed inner liners and sturdy corrugated boxes, then secure to pallets with stretch wrap to prevent leakage and moisture exposure.
- Describe clearly on the BOL: “Compounds, coal dust laying, NMFC 50135,” include package count (e.g., 24 boxes), and note non-hazardous to streamline carrier acceptance.
- Keep the product dry and clean during handling at mines, terminals, or power plants; use top sheets and corner protection so boxes stack safely without crushing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize freight spend by consolidating boxes to hit the lower class within 55–65, reducing LTL rates on recurring dust-control replenishments.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees, speeding tendering and pickup at coal yards or material handling sites.
- Weight-only classification simplifies quoting in TMS platforms and reduces reclass risk from missing dimensions, preventing costly invoice disputes.
- Robust boxing and palletizing reduce OS&D claims, keeping dust-control projects on schedule and avoiding downtime at conveyors and stockpiles.
