How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the product fits “Compounds, defoaming” and review NMFC Note 50142 to confirm it’s rated under 50140, not a different process chemical.
- Weigh each sealed box and total the shipment; the weight-driven rating places it between Class 55 and Class 70. Include dunnage and inner packaging in the gross weight.
- Use leak-resistant inner containers (e.g., HDPE bottles or jugs) bagged inside corrugated boxes with absorbent liners, tight closures, and orientation labels for liquids.
- Add handling cues like “Protect From Freezing” for emulsions that can separate in cold, and include an SDS for reference even though the commodity is non-hazardous.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Weight-based two-class rating (55–70) enables cost control by matching packaging and total weight to the most favorable class where applicable.
- Accurate gross weights on the BOL reduce carrier reclass and inspection fees, preventing surprise invoice adjustments.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and specialized paperwork, shortening tender time and improving dock throughput.
- Leak-secure boxed packaging cuts spill claims and exception handling, protecting on-time delivery metrics and customer scorecards.
