How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote by weight only: include drum tare, closures, and pallet in the gross weight. No density calculation is required for Class 70.
- Describe the commodity clearly on the BOL: “Compounds, degumming, fabric or fiber, in drums, NMFC 50145, Class 70,” and mark non-hazardous.
- Package drums tight-head with secured bungs, use absorbent pads and corner boards, then band and stretch-wrap to a pallet; keep bungs upright with “This Side Up” arrows.
- Provide an SDS/TDS for reference and note temperature sensitivities common to textile degumming agents (e.g., avoid freezing); example: 4 x 55-gal drums, 1 pallet, 480 lb total.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing at fixed Class 70 minimizes reclass risk and prevents surprise charges tied to density disputes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees, cutting total landed cost.
- Drum packaging improves cargo integrity, reducing spill potential and claims compared to pails or loose containers.
- Clear NMFC mapping speeds quote-to-book, shortens tender acceptance, and improves on-time LTL pickups for textile supply chains.
