How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 50147 and Class 55 on the BOL, capture actual scale weight for each pallet or total shipment (e.g., 12 boxes, 1,800 lb).
- Match packaging to state: dry compounds in poly-lined bags inside corrugated boxes; liquids in tight-head drums with secured bungs and ring locks.
- Palletize for stability: use 4-way pallets, stretch-wrap with corner boards, and add absorbent pads under drums to manage incidental seepage.
- Mark shipments clearly: “De-inking Compounds—Non-Hazardous,” orientation arrows, and lot/SDS references for mill intake and quick receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 enables predictable rating and reduces costly reclass disputes compared with density-based items.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and special carrier approvals, widening network options and cut-off times.
- Weight-based classification speeds quoting and tendering, improving cycle time for recycling operations and mill supply chains.
- Durable box/drum packaging lowers damage risk and claims, keeping production lines stocked and reducing downtime at paper facilities.
