How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm packaging matches the rule: dry material in bags, drums, or Package 2350; liquids in drums only. Example: 50 lb paper bags or 55 gal steel drums.
- Rate and tender at Class 55. No density rating applies, but list exact gross weight per pallet or drum for accurate LTL quotes.
- Palletize securely: shrink-wrap bagged product with corner boards, keep off the floor with dry pallets, and cap-stack to prevent burst. Band drums and use bolt-ring closures and bung seals.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 50180 Foundry Core Compounds, NOI,” packaging type and count, and total weight. Note non-hazardous to avoid hazmat handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower spend from fixed Class 55 versus higher mixed-chemical classes, often yielding better LTL base rates.
- Reduced reclass risk because the item is weight-based and not density-driven, minimizing billing disputes and delays.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat accessorials, improving transit flexibility and cost.
- Compliance with approved bags/drums/Package 2350 reduces leakage and OS&D claims, protecting margins and customer commitments.
