Notes

Note 50196: NOTE-Applies on compounds such as are used as an absorbing agent for gases in rescue breathing apparatus or in air conditioning apparatus.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use rigid corrugated boxes with sealed inner liners to contain media and dust; add dividers or trays so cartridges do not rub or crack during transit.
  2. Weigh each carton accurately and record gross weight on the BOL—Class 70 here is weight-based, so no density calc is required. Example: 24 cartridges per box, 38 lb.
  3. Describe clearly on the BOL: “Compounds, gas absorbing, NOI, NMFC 50195, Class 70” and verify applicability of Note, item 50196 to avoid reclass.
  4. Palletize with corner boards and stretch wrap; top-sheet to keep contents dry. If media can compress, cap the pallet and mark “Do Not Double Stack.”

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing with fixed Class 70—no density disputes, faster quotes, and fewer reweigh/reclass fees.
  • Non-hazardous status removes hazmat paperwork and surcharges, speeding pickup and reducing total landed cost.
  • Boxed presentation improves handling and claim prevention; better cube for LTL and easier consolidation of multiple SKUs.
  • Clear NMFC wording tied to Note 50196 enhances carrier compliance, leading to steadier transit times and billing accuracy.
