How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Rate by total shipment weight at Class 70. Example: two 55-gal steel drums at 840 lb gross — book LTL as Class 70 under NMFC 50200.
  2. Use UN-rated steel or HDPE drums with tight bungs, then palletize 2–4 drums per 48x40 pallet, add absorbent pads, corner boards, and steel or composite strapping.
  3. Prepare hazmat documents: SDS, UN/NA number and Proper Shipping Name once identified, packing group, and a valid 24/7 emergency contact; apply required UN markings and hazard labels.
  4. Book a hazmat-authorized LTL carrier, note accessorials (forklift or liftgate if no dock), and segregate from incompatible cargo per SDS and carrier rules.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 70 rating eliminates density studies, speeding quotes and reducing reclass disputes.
  • Standard drum packaging improves cross-dock handling and lowers spill or damage risk, cutting claim exposure.
  • Complete hazmat prep reduces terminal dwell, rework charges, and redelivery delays for time-critical gas treatment projects.
  • Weight-based classification enables accurate rate forecasting and cleaner TMS automation for recurring chemical shipments.
