How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the product is non-corrosive on the SDS, then determine if other hazmat traits apply (e.g., flammable). Include the proper shipping name and UN/NA number if required.
- Quote and book by total handling-unit weight. Classes are weight-based for this item, so verify gross weight per drum, pail, or tote to hit the correct bracket.
- Use tight, leak-resistant, UN-rated containers with secure closures. Palletize upright, add absorbent and a liner if needed, and apply orientation and hazmat labels clearly.
- Separate these cleaners from food items and incompatible chemicals. Provide carriers with SDS and hazmat paperwork to avoid pickup refusals and delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate weight-bracket classing (55–100) reduces reclass and rebill risk, protecting margins on repeat LTL moves.
- Potential to consolidate into heavier handling units to qualify for lower classes, cutting linehaul costs when operationally feasible.
- Proper hazmat documentation and packaging speed carrier acceptance, reducing dwell time and accessorials tied to failed pickups.
- Non-corrosive designation expands carrier options versus corrosives while still maintaining safety compliance for hazardous traits.
