How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Package compounds in sturdy boxes with sealed liners to stop seepage; close with filament tape and label each box with NMFC 50240 and Class 70.
  2. Weigh every box and record net and gross weight on the BOL; class is fixed at 70, so no density calc or dimensional breaks are needed.
  3. State the material purpose clearly (metal annealing or tempering, NOI) to avoid reclassification; reference Note, item 50241, if the carrier requests details.
  4. Unitize boxes on pallets with edge protection and stretch wrap; keep lids upward and add absorbent pads under cartons if formulas are oily.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and placard delays, reducing total landed cost.
  • Fixed Class 70 streamlines quoting and auditing, minimizing reclass charges from density disputes.
  • Standard boxed packaging speeds dock handling and improves stacking, cutting accessorials linked to repack or leaks.
  • Clear NOI identification for annealing/tempering compounds keeps compliance tight and claim risk low during LTL moves.
