How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Put NMFC 50310 – Compounds, sugar clarifier, NOI, Class 70 on the BOL and pallet labels. Record actual weight per pallet and per inner package for accurate rating.
- Pick packaging based on form: poly-lined bags for dry powders, fiber/HDPE drums for granules, and IBC totes for liquids. Use stretch wrap, corner boards, and top sheets to prevent tears and moisture.
- Keep product dry and clean during transit. Palletize off the floor, add desiccant if humidity risk, and avoid co-loading next to odor-sensitive foodstuffs.
- Share SDS or spec sheet with the carrier even though it is non-hazardous. This speeds pickups and helps terminals stage and store it correctly.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing with fixed Class 70 and weight-based rating—no density math or reclass disputes.
- Wider carrier options and fewer regulatory add-ons since it ships non-hazardous in standard bags, drums, or totes.
- Lower claims exposure: solid unitization and moisture control reduce spills, caking, and delivery delays.
- Procurement flexibility: choose bags for short hauls or drums/totes for longer lanes to optimize cost per pound.
