How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Mark the BOL as: “Compounds, insulating or sound deadener, liquid or paste, boxed — NMFC 50315, Class 55.” Include accurate gross weight for each carton.
  2. Use leak-tight inner containers with sealed lids inside corrugated boxes; line cartons with poly bags and add absorbent pads to control any seepage.
  3. Palletize upright with orientation arrows and ‘Do Not Stack’ cones if lids are weak. Tighten with stretch wrap and corner boards to prevent shifting.
  4. Protect temperature-sensitive sealers (e.g., butyl or latex body panel sealers) from freezing or extreme heat; request temp-protect service if needed.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 55 eliminates density calculations, reducing quote time and reclass risks.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and simplifies carrier acceptance and routing.
  • Boxed, leak-resistant packing lowers damage and spill claims, protecting margins and customer satisfaction.
  • Predictable rating helps negotiate better LTL rates for recurring shipments of sealers and sound deadeners.
