How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark the BOL as: “Compounds, insulating or sound deadener, liquid or paste, boxed — NMFC 50315, Class 55.” Include accurate gross weight for each carton.
- Use leak-tight inner containers with sealed lids inside corrugated boxes; line cartons with poly bags and add absorbent pads to control any seepage.
- Palletize upright with orientation arrows and ‘Do Not Stack’ cones if lids are weak. Tighten with stretch wrap and corner boards to prevent shifting.
- Protect temperature-sensitive sealers (e.g., butyl or latex body panel sealers) from freezing or extreme heat; request temp-protect service if needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 eliminates density calculations, reducing quote time and reclass risks.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and simplifies carrier acceptance and routing.
- Boxed, leak-resistant packing lowers damage and spill claims, protecting margins and customer satisfaction.
- Predictable rating helps negotiate better LTL rates for recurring shipments of sealers and sound deadeners.
